The spread of digital technologies and information systems in companies and public administrations has revolutionized the way of working and information management. Another revolution in the revolution is realized thanks to the zeroing of the distances between the information systems between them physically distant, thanks to the Internet.
This evolution has also involved the scope of spatial data. Geographic information systems (GIS Geographical Information System), born around the 60s, thanks to the Internet, its associated technologies and the increase in computer's hardware resources, available at a lower prices, allowed the development of advanced solutions that only a few years ago would have required substantial investment. One of the most interesting developments about these systems, is the one allowing spatial data to be distributed: the Web GIS.
The distributed nature of data requires the use of particular standards to ensure interoperability. The organization of reference for the development of standards related to spatial data and services associated with them is the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). Following the specifications provided by the OGC, many developers community are devoted to the production of components for open source GIS.
The main purpose of the project involves the construction of a GIS system for a concrete government (the Municipality of Tavagnacco).
The first phase of the work involved the analysis of the context and of the requirements of a GIS solution for the specific domain that. Specifically they examined the existing IT structures and the different possible applications of GIS. Clarified the general framework, we have identified two specific application areas on which It focused the practical implementation of the system. The first concerns the publication to the outside (via the Internet) of spatial data related to the general plan (PRG); the other internal management of spatial data, with particular attention to the change of data associated with the house numbering.
It is then passed to analyze existing data and propose a model of global data.On the basis of this data model it has been proposed a solution Web GIS, which realizes the functionality expectations. The proposed solution integrates many open source technologies and ensures compliance with the specifications of the OGC.
The proposed system performs the requested functionality, among which we find the location of the streets and the support to questions by graphic pointer.
